All activities that an organisation is engaged in fall into three areas: securing the future (strategy), managing the present (operations) and differentiating themselves from the competition (positioning). Through these activities the company creates a potential for success. How successful they are in these areas will determine future potential.
Red consultants have several years of experience of being called in to help companies that have become ‘stuck’ or are in transition. We are typically briefed to help them develop strategy or re-engineer processes or refresh their identity. This experience has allowed us to determine relatively quickly the strength of the organisation’s potential for success.
We find that, in most cases, the issues that were are briefed to 'fix' are not the source of the blockage. Or it are only part of the problem. Most problems arise from the lack of integration between strategy, operations and identity – we call the area of overlap the Red Spot. When the Red Spot is small – future potential is limited. The larger the overlap, the greater the potential.
